Just Don’t Have Sex: Riot Barbie Kathi Gebel’s New Viral Moment Leaves German Parliament Buzzing
German MP Kathi Gebel has delivered another viral moment in the Bundestag , this time telling a male lawmaker that abstinence, not legislation, is the answer if he genuinely wants to protect unborn life. Speaking during a heated debate on abortion rights , Gebel said that if the gentlemen of the AfD , and she noted it is almost exclusively gentlemen, truly want to protect unborn life so much, then she can only advise them to perhaps simply not have sex, since abstinence remains the safest method of contraception.
She followed the remark by mocking the lawmaker further, asking how often she still needs to provide him sex education before adding, really, for emphasis. The comment landed as another mic drop moment for the 29 year old psychology graduate and Die Linke lawmaker, who has built a reputation in German politics as an outspoken voice on women's policy and reproductive rights.
Gebel did not stop at the jab. She went on to accuse AfD lawmakers of wanting to impose what she called a forced pregnancy on women while showing little regard for the consequences those women would face. She then turned her criticism toward Germany's existing legal framework, stating that the biggest scandal is that abortions in the country remain prohibited, criminally sanctioned, and only exempt from punishment under certain conditions, a reference to the long debated reform of Germany's abortion law.
This is not the first time Gebel has made headlines for a sharp comeback inside the chamber. Earlier this year, she went viral after AfD MP Martin Reichardt interrupted her during a debate on violence against women, prompting her to respond that the clitoris has thousands of nerve endings and that he was still more sensitive, a line that drew laughter in the House and millions of views online after she reposted the clip. She later issued a correction on the exact nerve ending count while standing firmly by the substance of her criticism.
Known online as the self-described riot Barbie of the Bundestag, Gebel serves as her party's spokesperson on women's policy and has previously drawn attention for calling out victim blaming in cases of sexual assault. Her latest remark is already being widely shared on social media, with reactions split between lawmakers and citizens debating whether such blunt language belongs in parliamentary debate, and supporters praising her for cutting through what she views as hypocrisy in the abortion debate.
