Kabir Khan to Bring Silkyara Tunnel Rescue to Screen in Aamir Khan Production
Superstar Aamir Khan has announced a new production titled “Silkyara 41” , a feature film inspired by the remarkable rescue of 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand in 2023. The project will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kabir Khan and is being produced by Aamir Khan Productions , Mind Blowing Films of Australia, and Kabir Khan Films .
Penned by Australian screenwriter Andrew Anastasios , known for The Water Diviner , the film will recreate the extraordinary 17-day rescue operation that captured the attention of the nation and the world. The workers were trapped after a section of the under-construction Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi district collapsed in November 2023. Through a complex, round-the-clock effort involving multiple Indian agencies and international experts, all 41 workers were eventually brought out safely.
The film will also spotlight the contribution of renowned Australian tunnelling expert Arnold Dix , who played a key role in helping plan and execute the rescue strategy alongside Indian teams.
Speaking about the project, Aamir Khan said the incident had moved him deeply and deserved to be told on the big screen. He described the rescue as a story of courage, resilience, ingenuity and humanity in the face of overwhelming odds. He also noted that the announcement comes at a time when India and Australia are entering a new phase in their bilateral relationship.
Director Kabir Khan said what attracted him most was the profoundly human aspect of the story. Beyond the engineering challenge, he said, the rescue was about anxious families waiting for their loved ones and countless individuals coming together with a shared determination to save every life.
Arnold Dix echoed that sentiment, saying the mission was never about a single individual but about people from different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds uniting with one purpose, to bring the workers home safely.
With “Silkyara 41” , the makers aim to transform one of India’s most inspiring rescue missions into a powerful cinematic tribute to teamwork, perseverance and hope. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan Productions is also preparing for the release of “Batwara 1947” , directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal , which is scheduled to hit theatres on August 13 .
