Karnataka: Six Found Dead In Vijayapura Lake, Police Probe Family’s Final Movements

The discovery of six bodies in Bhutnal Lake has taken a turn after police linked the victims to a missing-person complaint involving a mother and five children. The investigation is now focused on reconstructing their movements and determining whether they drowned accidentally, died by suicide or were victims of foul play.

The deceased have been identified as Shobha Jalageri, 35, and her five children from Toravi village in Vijayapura district. The children were identified as Vidya, Suvarna, Gowdesh, Sanika and Vikas. Police have established that all six belonged to the same family.

Police said Shobha left home at 6 am on August 24 after a domestic dispute with her husband. She reportedly left with four children and later went to a residential school to take another child, who had hearing difficulties. Her husband filed the missing-person complaint at Vijayapura Rural police station and searched for the family.

Investigators attempted to trace their movements, but a major lead was unavailable: Shobha had reportedly left her mobile phone at home. Police could not use phone-location data to establish their route. Officers are now speaking to relatives and examining the missing-person complaint and available information to establish where the family went before reaching the lake.

Police received information at 8:45 am on August 26 that six bodies were floating in Bhutnal Lake. Police and Fire Department personnel recovered them and shifted the bodies to BLDE Hospital.

The police are keeping multiple possibilities open. A suspicion of suicide has emerged given the reported domestic dispute and the family's disappearance together, but officials have stressed that this is not a publicly confirmed conclusion. Accidental drowning remains under examination, while foul play has not been conclusively ruled out yet.

Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbargi said post-mortem and FSL reports will be crucial. Investigators are examining whether wind and waves could have moved the bodies within the lake. The precise sequence of events and cause of death will depend on forensic findings and questioning of family members and witnesses.
