Karnataka to Celebrate Engineers' Day Officially From Next Year, Says CM Shivakumar

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday announced that the state government will officially celebrate Engineers' Day from next year, recognising the contribution of engineers to the state's development.

Shivakumar made the announcement while speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of renowned engineer and statesman Sir M Visvesvaraya here on the occasion of Engineers' Day.

“From next year, Engineers' Day will be celebrated by the government,” the Chief Minister said, adding that an official order would be issued in this regard.

He said a proposal to formally organise the occasion at the government level had been submitted and he had given his approval. The modalities for the celebrations will be finalised after discussions with officials, he added.

Shivakumar said Karnataka produces more than one lakh engineers every year, making it the state with the highest number of engineers in the country.

“It is our responsibility to recognise them,” he said, urging engineers across the state to take note of the government's decision. He stressed that acknowledging their contribution was part of the state's responsibility.

Describing engineers as an asset to the country, Shivakumar said they play a crucial role in converting scientific research and discoveries into practical applications.

“Engineers lay the foundation for all development,” he said.

The Chief Minister noted that engineers were traditionally associated with fields such as architecture and construction, but their role had expanded significantly over the years. They now make major contributions to sectors including energy, infrastructure and information technology, he said.

Paying tribute to Visvesvaraya, Shivakumar described him as a role model for the country and highlighted his immense contribution to Karnataka.

Engineers' Day is observed in India every year on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Visvesvaraya, one of the country's most celebrated engineers and statesmen.
