Karthi's 'Sardar 2' Gets Official September 10, 2026 Release Date

After nearly four years of anticipation, delays, and mounting fan pressure, Karthi's long-awaited spy sequel finally has a date locked in. Director PS Mithran announced on Wednesday that Sardar 2 will release worldwide on September 10, 2026 , declaring on social media: "Sky-shattering update. #Sardar2 in cinemas from Sep 10th, 2026, WORLDWIDE. Agent Karthi arrives. Get ready for the mission of a lifetime."

Officially announced in October 2022 at the success meet of the original Sardar , principal photography commenced in July 2024 and wrapped up by June 2025, with schedules filmed across Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangkok, Luton, Madurai, and Kochi. The road was not without setbacks. In March 2025, Karthi sustained a ligament tear while performing a stunt in Mysore, forcing a brief production halt before the team resumed filming in Chennai. By late March 2025, 90 percent of shooting had been completed.

Karthi reprises his dual roles as agent Sardar Chandra Bose and Inspector Vijay Prakash , with Rajisha Vijayan returning from the original. SJ Suryah plays the menacing antagonist Muhammad Paari alias Black Dagger , as revealed in the prologue released on March 31, 2025. Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath join the new cast. The story begins in Cambodia before shifting to China, significantly expanding the film's geopolitical scope. Music is by Sam CS , cinematography by George C Williams , editing by Ruben , and stunts choreographed by Dhilip Subbarayan . Audio rights have been acquired by Sony Music India . The film is jointly produced by Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment .

The September announcement ends a prolonged period of financial uncertainty that had surrounded the project, with industry observers now watching closely whether Sardar 2 can overcome the elevated bar set by the Dhurandhar franchise in the Indian spy thriller space. The original Sardar grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box office, ranking among the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2022.
