KEM Says Sejal Pawar Is Not a Doctor Yet, Sends MBBS Student on Forced Leave
Mumbai's civic-run KEM Hospital has intensified action against MBBS student Sejal Pawar after her controversial remarks about male cadavers during a stand-up comedy show triggered widespread outrage, disciplinary proceedings and a cyber police probe.
The hospital has placed Pawar on 15-day forced leave and barred her from entering the hospital, medical college and hostel premises. Officials said the move followed a preliminary inquiry into a viral video showing her making remarks about deceased male bodies used in medical education. She has been sent home to her parents pending further proceedings.
The comments drew criticism from medical professionals and the public, who said they disrespected body donors and the deceased. Pawar later issued a public apology , expressing regret over her remarks.
KEM Hospital Dean Dr Harish M Pathak termed the comments unacceptable and reiterated the institution's commitment to respecting individuals who donate their bodies for medical training. A two-member committee examined the matter under National Medical Commission guidelines governing professional conduct and social media behaviour.
Hospital authorities and the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) clarified that Pawar is not a qualified doctor but an undergraduate MBBS student. They stressed that her remarks were personal and did not represent KEM Hospital, the medical profession or resident doctors. MARD also noted she is not a member of the association.
According to reports, Pawar became emotional during questioning and repeatedly expressed remorse. Authorities have recommended counselling and parental supervision to help her cope with the backlash.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered a case against comedian Pranit More, web developer Himanshu Jangra, Pawar and others for allegedly circulating obscene and objectionable content online. Pawar has reportedly been summoned as part of the ongoing investigation .
The controversy intensified after an older video allegedly showing Pawar criticising KEM faculty and fellow students resurfaced online. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has backed strict action, while Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar has demanded Pawar's suspension and removal of the viral content. No final disciplinary order has yet been announced.
