Kerala Announces Enhanced Monsoon Relief Package as Death Toll Rises to 26

The Kerala government on Wednesday announced an enhanced monsoon relief package for families affected by heavy rain, floods and landslides, as the state's monsoon death toll climbed to 26. The measures are aimed at strengthening disaster management, emergency response and rehabilitation while providing immediate financial assistance to affected families.

Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said 26 people have lost their lives in monsoon-related incidents so far, while 11 people have been injured and four remain missing. He added that 462 relief camps are currently sheltering 27,048 displaced people, with the highest number of camps operating in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Alappuzha.

The state has also reported significant agricultural damage, with 1,882 hectares of farmland affected, impacting 23,537 farmers. Preliminary estimates place crop losses at ₹67.44 crore, although the final figure is expected to rise after detailed assessments.

The Kerala Cabinet approved ₹8 lakh compensation for the families of those who died in the disaster. The package includes ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) and ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

The relief package reflects lessons learned from Kerala's major monsoon disasters in recent years, particularly the devastating 2018 floods, which prompted the state to strengthen early warning systems, evacuation planning, relief camp management and inter-agency coordination. Since then, disaster response has increasingly focused on quicker evacuations, improved emergency communication and long-term rehabilitation alongside immediate relief.
