Kerala Police Association Condemns Attack on Officer by SFI Activists

The Kerala Police Association on Sunday condemned the alleged attack on Civil Police Officer (CPO) Midhun Roy by SFI activists , calling it “shocking and an insult” to democratic, progressive Kerala .

According to the Association, the incident occurred on Saturday evening at a shopping mall in Thiruvananthapuram , where four SFI activists reportedly verbally abused and assaulted Roy . The attack is said to have been in retaliation for a lathi charge conducted on New Year’s Eve at Kovalam , which involved university students participating in a march.

The Vanchiyoor police have registered two separate cases, one against the SFI activists and another against the officer. The Police Association criticized acts such as marching to police officers’ homes and circulating photographs of officers and their families on social media, describing them as “highly condemnable” and threatening the safety of law enforcement personnel.

The statement further highlighted that similar incidents had occurred previously , including an attack during a university march in which a police officer sustained serious injuries. Mocking remarks, such as claiming the officer had “lost only one eye,” were made publicly, showing a pattern of targeted anti-police actions under the guise of political movements .

The Association urged political organizations and the public to unite against attacks on police personnel and other anti-democratic forms of protest. It also demanded a proper investigation , strict action against the perpetrators, and measures by the government and police department to ensure officers feel secure while performing their duties .

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan , raised concerns over the handling of cases involving attacks on police officers. He alleged that visuals aired in the media clearly showed SFI activists following, provoking, and assaulting Officer Roy, yet the authorities reportedly invoked a non-bailable section against the assaulted officer and also made his sister an accused .

Satheesan claimed that only minor legal sections were applied against the SFI activists , and no arrests had been made so far. He questioned the justice system under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan , who also holds the Home portfolio, and compared the current situation in Kerala to the final years of CPI(M) rule in West Bengal , warning that the public would hold the government accountable.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism , highlighting ongoing tensions between law enforcement officers and student political organizations in the state.
