A political controversy has erupted in Kerala after the Vice Chancellors of three state universities attended an RSS centenary programme addressed by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat , prompting sharp exchanges between the BJP and the Congress-led UDF government over the role of academic institutions in public life.

The Vice Chancellors of Kerala University, Mahatma Gandhi University and Malayalam University participated in the event held in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. Their presence drew criticism from Chief Minister V D Satheesan and senior ministers, who argued that university heads must uphold the secular and non-partisan character of higher education institutions.

Former BJP Kerala president K Surendran defended the Vice Chancellors and the RSS, accusing the government of targeting individuals for attending a public programme. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also criticised the government's response, describing it as an attempt to intimidate academic leaders.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Higher Education Minister Roji M John termed the participation a serious lapse, contending that Vice Chancellors occupy positions that require ideological neutrality . They urged the officials to acknowledge their mistake and avoid similar engagements in the future.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of long-standing tensions in Kerala's university system , where appointments, academic autonomy and the role of the Governor who serves as Chancellor of state universities have frequently sparked political confrontations. Universities in the state have often become arenas for broader ideological contestation involving the Left, the Congress-led opposition and the BJP.

The episode also reflects the RSS's continued outreach to educational and intellectual circles beyond its traditional organisational base. Critics view such interactions as attempts to expand ideological influence in academia, while supporters argue they represent legitimate participation in public discourse.

The controversy has reignited debate over the balance between individual freedom, institutional neutrality and academic independence in Kerala's higher education sector.
