Kerala’s Palakkad Horror: Unidentified Man Killed, Seven Arrested, 10-Member SIT Formed
A brutal killing in Kerala’s Palakkad district has once again raised disturbing questions about mob violence and the growing tendency of people to take the law into their own hands. Seven people have been arrested, and a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the alleged lynching of an unidentified man whose body was found with around 52 injuries.
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, condemning the incident in the state Assembly on Friday, described the killing as “extremely brutal and condemnable”. He said such violence was unacceptable in a state known for its high literacy and progressive laws, assuring the House that nobody involved would be spared.
The victim, estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old, has yet to be identified. Since the incident occurred in a village near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, Chennithala said he had directed the Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) to seek assistance from his Tamil Nadu counterpart to establish the man’s identity.
The case initially began as an unnatural death investigation after residents discovered the body near the Moolathara dam, close to Meenakshipuram, on Sunday morning. However, CCTV footage and further evidence reportedly revealed that a group of people had attacked the man, allegedly pelting him with stones and beating him with wooden sticks. Police subsequently invoked murder charges against the accused.
According to the minister, the alleged attackers were provoked by claims that the man had exposed himself in front of local women. Chennithala stressed that even if an offence had been committed, the accused had no right to punish the man themselves. Law-enforcement agencies and courts, he said, were responsible for handling such allegations.
The killing has revived painful memories of previous incidents in Palakkad. In 2018, tribal youth Madhu, 27, was beaten to death by a mob after being accused of stealing rice and other groceries in Attappadi. In December 2025, five people were arrested for allegedly beating a Chhattisgarh native to death on suspicion of theft within the Walayar police station limits.
The latest incident is the third alleged mob lynching reported in the district in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for accountability and effective prevention.
