Kimi Antonelli makes F1 history as Ferrari chase Mercedes at Chinese GP
Teen prodigy Kimi Antonelli will start from pole position at the Formula 1 Heineken Chinese Grand Prix after a sensational qualifying performance, becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the grid for a full Formula 1 Grand Prix . The 19-year-old Mercedes driver edged teammate George Russell by 0.222 seconds , securing a front-row lockout for the team under the sport’s sweeping new regulations.
Russell had appeared unstoppable earlier on Saturday after winning the 19-lap sprint race , but a technical issue in qualifying forced him to stop on track. He returned to the pits and produced a last-gasp lap good enough for second place. Ferrari duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc qualified third and fourth and will aim to challenge Mercedes at the start.
In the sprint, Russell continued his strong form following his season-opening win in Australia. He fought wheel-to-wheel with Hamilton in the early laps, with the lead changing hands repeatedly before Russell pulled clear.
“Lewis did an amazing job in the early laps, 20 years of experience caught me off guard,” Russell said. “It was pretty fun in the end… a lot of strategy and overtakes. Usually sprint races are pretty boring.”
Hamilton, cheered by fans after greeting them with “Ni hao,” acknowledged Mercedes’ pace advantage. “That speed on the straight is just a little bit too much at the moment. I think I put up a good fight,” he said after finishing third behind teammate Leclerc.
Kimi Antonelli, who finished fifth in the sprint after serving a penalty, will now lead the field into Sunday’s main race, the biggest start of his young career. Current world champion Lando Norris showed solid pace in the sprint, finishing strongly near the front and reinforcing his status as the title holder to beat this season. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen struggled with the new car characteristics and ended the sprint in ninth, admitting, “Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.”
With Mercedes locking out the front row but Ferrari known for strong race starts, the Grand Prix on Sunday is set to deliver a high-stakes battle as teams adapt to Formula 1’s new era.
