Kimi Antonelli Storms From 19th to Win Italian GP, Makes Monza History

Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable drives of his young Formula 1 career on Sunday, charging from 19th on the grid to victory at the Italian Grand Prix and becoming the first Italian in six decades to triumph at Monza.

The Mercedes driver needed fewer than 17 laps to fight his way to the front, turning what initially appeared to be a difficult afternoon into a memorable home victory.

Once at the sharp end, Antonelli faced another major challenge in the form of his teammate and championship rival George Russell. The Mercedes pair fought fiercely for the lead, with neither willing to give ground in the battle for victory.

Antonelli eventually made the decisive move with three laps remaining, passing Russell for the final time before pulling clear to take the chequered flag.

As the Italian crossed the finish line, the significance of the victory was not lost on him.

"Oh my god ... it feels like a dream," Antonelli said after completing his extraordinary comeback.

The result provided some relief for the home crowd after Ferrari endured a disappointing afternoon. Charles Leclerc crashed out early, ending hopes of a Ferrari victory in front of the passionate Monza supporters.

Lewis Hamilton, driving the other Ferrari, could manage only sixth place.

For Antonelli, however, the day belonged entirely to Mercedes. The victory was his seventh of the season and of his F1 career, further strengthening his position at the top of the championship.

He now holds a 66-point advantage over Russell, with the Italian's spectacular Monza triumph adding another defining chapter to his rapidly developing F1 career.
