King Charles III is set to make history in London on Thursday by publicly releasing his personal tax bill for the first time as monarch, marking a significant transparency shift in the British monarchy amid growing scrutiny of royal finances and renewed public debate over accountability, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The disclosure will be made during the annual Buckingham Palace briefing on the Sovereign Grant , the mechanism through which taxpayers fund official royal duties, alongside a broader financial report detailing how public funds and royal income have been managed. According to palace sources and multiple international reports, the statement will cover the 2024–25 financial year and will include tax paid on the King’s private income.

The development is being widely reported as a historic first, as no reigning British monarch has previously published a full personal tax bill. While King Charles had earlier disclosed his tax payments when he was Prince of Wales, this marks the first such release since he ascended the throne in 2022 following Queen Elizabeth II’s death. The King voluntarily pays income and capital gains tax on private earnings, although the monarch is not legally required to do so under British law.

His private income is primarily drawn from the Duchy of Lancaster , as well as the Balmoral and Sandringham estates , along with investments and savings, while official royal expenditure continues to be funded separately through the Sovereign Grant, which stood at about £86.3 million in the previous reported year.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of the royal family following controversies surrounding Prince Andrew (Andrew Mountbatten Windsor) and renewed parliamentary interest in royal property arrangements. Buckingham Palace has described the disclosure as part of efforts to “modernise and evolve” the institution and improve public understanding of royal finances.

Prince William, as Prince of Wales, is also expected to follow a similar transparency model through forthcoming disclosures linked to the Duchy of Cornwall, which manages extensive land and investment holdings generating significant annual income.

Analysts note that the initiative reflects a broader attempt by the monarchy to align with modern democratic expectations, enhance accountability, and strengthen public trust at a time of intensified political and institutional scrutiny in the United Kingdom.
