Kite Strings Turn Deadly for Birds as 17 Incidents Reported in Delhi on I-Day
At least 17 birds were killed or injured in separate kite-flying-related incidents in Delhi on Independence Day, officials said, highlighting the risks posed to wildlife by kite strings during the festive period.
According to Delhi Fire Services officials, the department received 17 calls between 2 pm and 9 pm on Saturday reporting birds that had either been injured or found dead after becoming entangled in kite strings.
Fire services personnel responded to the calls and attended to the reported cases across different parts of the national capital. However, officials did not specify the species of birds involved or provide a separate breakdown of the number of birds killed and those that sustained injuries.
The incidents were reported as kite-flying activity continued across Delhi on Independence Day, when kites are traditionally flown in several parts of the city as part of celebrations. While the activity remains popular, kite strings can pose a serious threat to birds, particularly when they become caught in the lines while flying.
Entangled birds can suffer cuts and other injuries, while some may die after being unable to free themselves. Kite strings can also remain suspended from trees, buildings and other structures after kites have been flown, creating hazards for birds even after the activity has ended.
The 17 calls received by the fire services underline the scale of the problem during the day's celebrations. Emergency personnel are often called upon to rescue birds trapped in inaccessible locations, including trees and rooftops.
The latest incidents have again drawn attention to the impact of kite-flying on birds in urban areas, particularly during occasions when the activity increases sharply. Officials, however, did not provide further details about the locations of the incidents or the condition of the rescued birds.
The Delhi Fire Services said its teams attended the reported cases after receiving information from members of the public.
