Kits of hope: Odisha empowers youth in 485 Maoist-hit villages through sports
In a pioneering step to integrate youth from remote regions into the mainstream, the Odisha government is set to distribute sports kits in 485 Maoist-affected villages across 10 districts. The initiative, under the ‘Gramodaya’ campaign , aims not only to foster sporting talent but also to promote peace, discipline, and social harmony in these challenging areas.
The Department of Sports and Youth Services has sanctioned Rs 2.42 crore for the program, ensuring that each village receives a kit worth Rs 50,000 . These kits will be equipped for outdoor games such as cricket, football, volleyball, and badminton , as well as indoor games like chess and carrom , providing comprehensive avenues for recreation and skill development.
Districts benefiting from the scheme include Bargarh, Bolangir, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, and Rayagada . Officials emphasized that the campaign seeks to uncover hidden talent from remote areas, giving youth opportunities to shine while encouraging healthy lifestyles.
“ Gramodaya is more than just a distribution program; it is a message of peace, progress, and social harmony in Maoist-affected regions,” the department stated. By engaging the youth through sports, the initiative aspires to create positive engagement in areas traditionally challenged by unrest.
The move also aligns with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ target to eliminate Maoist influence nationwide by the end of March , signaling a blend of development and security-focused strategies. Through Gramodaya, Odisha demonstrates how sports can be a transformative tool, nurturing talent while sowing the seeds of long-term social cohesion.
