Mohun Bagan Super Giant kicked off their Durand Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over arch-rivals East Bengal, combining clinical finishing with disciplined defending in front of a packed Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

The highly anticipated Kolkata derby lived up to its billing, with both sides battling intensely from the opening whistle. While clear-cut chances were scarce in the first half, Mohun Bagan remained composed and capitalised on the decisive moment after the break.

The breakthrough arrived in the 52nd minute, courtesy of Sahal Abdul Samad, whose calm finish proved enough to settle the contest. The move began with relentless pressing from youngster Kiyan Nassiri, who dispossessed an East Bengal defender near the penalty area before driving to the byline. His low cross evaded Manvir Singh, but the loose ball fell perfectly for Sahal, who slotted into an empty net.

The victory marked a dream start for new head coach Panagiotis Dilberis, whose side impressed with its defensive organisation and tactical discipline. Mohun Bagan rarely allowed East Bengal's attackers any clear opportunities and maintained their shape throughout the contest.

At the heart of that defensive effort was goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, who produced an outstanding performance. Along with defenders led by Rahul Bheke, Kaith ensured East Bengal found it difficult to create meaningful openings despite increasing pressure in the closing stages.

East Bengal, under returning coach Antonio Habas, looked sharper after halftime and dominated possession during the final 15 minutes. They came agonisingly close to equalising in the 87th minute when Dani Ramirez redirected a dangerous cross from P.V. Vishnu, only to see the effort graze the outside of the post.

The best chance came deep into stoppage time. Ramirez floated another inviting delivery towards Mohammed Rashid, whose close-range effort seemed destined for the net before Kaith produced a sensational reflex save to preserve Mohun Bagan's slender advantage.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Green and Maroon faithful as Mohun Bagan secured early bragging rights in one of Indian football's fiercest rivalries while beginning their Durand Cup journey on a winning note.
