The 32nd Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is likely to open at the iconic Victoria Memorial with a red-carpet event, as organisers plan to showcase the city's cultural landmarks and introduce new initiatives to promote Bengali cinema.

Festival chief advisor and actor Mithun Chakraborty said the festival is scheduled for December 16–23, marking the first edition under the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal. The Victoria Memorial inauguration is still being considered, with cutouts of popular actors planned along the red carpet.

South Indian superstars Rajinikanth and Prabhas may attend the festival. Chakraborty is also in talks with Anupam Kher and plans to approach Kangana Ranaut, while Paresh Rawal is expected to participate. Organisers are also exploring invitations to Hollywood personalities and other international stars.

The festival is expected to introduce an Uttam Kumar Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring the legendary Bengali actor. Films featuring Uttam Kumar are also expected to be a major attraction. Organisers have discussed increasing prize money for the Bengali Panorama category from ₹7.5 lakh to ₹10 lakh and the Indian Panorama category from ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh.

Ireland has been reported as the focus country for this edition, adding an international dimension to the programme. Organisers are also considering a redesign of the festival's logo and Royal Bengal trophy. Filmmaker Sandip Ray, who designed the original Calcutta Film Festival logo, has expressed willingness to modernise the artwork if it becomes available.

Another proposal involves developing a film bazaar for the Bengali film industry, potentially creating opportunities for emerging filmmakers and industry professionals.

Traditionally held in November, the festival has been shifted to December this year following the change of government in the state. International films from various countries have already been submitted for consideration. The inaugural ceremony was held at Netaji Indoor Stadium and Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in previous editions.

The Victoria Memorial venue, celebrity attendance and several proposed initiatives remain subject to confirmation.
