The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has expelled former party general secretary Kripa Alva for six years with immediate effect over her alleged involvement in a sting operation targeting Congress leaders in the state. The expulsion order, issued by KPCC Vice-President M Narayanaswamy, said the controversy had caused embarrassment to the party owing to negative publicity and media reactions.

“As your name has figured in this sting operation case and your conduct in the matter amounts to anti-party activities, on the instructions of the Hon'ble KPCC President, you are hereby expelled from the party for a period of six years with immediate effect,” the order stated.

The KPCC said it had issued a show-cause notice to Alva, seeking her explanation regarding the allegations. However, she had not submitted any response or explanation so far, according to the order.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier named Alva in connection with the alleged defamatory video. He has also obtained a court injunction restraining media houses from airing or publishing the video. The controversy centres on a sting operation containing allegations against Siddaramaiah, which prompted a police investigation in Bengaluru.

On Thursday, Bengaluru police said the allegation of sexual abuse featured in the video was part of a “fabricated and deliberately constructed narrative.” According to the police, statements recorded during the investigation and the evidence collected did not substantiate the occurrence of the incident described in the video.

The findings add to the developments surrounding the controversy, which has drawn attention to the allegations against the former chief minister and the circumstances surrounding the video's circulation.

The Congress's disciplinary action against Alva follows the controversy and the party's stated concerns over the adverse publicity it generated. The expulsion order did not detail any further action beyond the six-year suspension from party membership.

The case remains centred on the alleged sting operation, the claims made in the video and the police's findings regarding the allegations.
