A seven-year-old Labrador named Mary helped Uttar Pradesh Police identify an accused in the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl after investigators initially failed to find any leads in the case.

The incident occurred on June 19 in Babrala, where the child was found in a distressed condition by her mother. Police said the girl was unable to explain what had happened, while the investigation was hampered by the absence of functional CCTV cameras and eyewitnesses .

Officers collected forensic samples and evidence from the scene, but conventional methods failed to identify a suspect. Police then sought assistance from the district's K-9 unit and deployed Mary, a trained tracking dog.

After being given a scent trail from articles recovered at the scene, Mary followed the trail through nearby lanes and eventually stopped at a house located a few hundred metres away. Police said the lead provided by the Labrador proved crucial in identifying the accused and taking further legal action.

In recognition of her role in the investigation, sniffer dog Mary and her handler were honoured, with authorities announcing a cash reward of ₹10,000 for the police dog unit.

The case highlights the growing importance of police dog squads in criminal investigations. Trained K-9 dogs assist law enforcement agencies in tracking suspects, locating missing persons, recovering evidence, and detecting explosives and narcotics . Their highly developed sense of smell allows them to follow scent trails that humans cannot detect.

Police dogs undergo specialised training in scent tracking, obedience, search operations and crime-scene procedures before being deployed in the field. Their abilities often prove invaluable in cases where electronic surveillance, forensic evidence or eyewitness accounts are limited.

Officials said Mary's contribution demonstrates how trained police dogs can provide critical breakthroughs and help investigators solve complex cases when conventional methods fail.
