Despite being only 18 years old , Lamine Yamal is set to shoulder the responsibility of a seasoned veteran as Spain heads into the FIFA World Cup in search of its second global title.

The Barcelona prodigy has been one of Spain’s brightest stars in recent years, becoming a central figure for both club and country. He made his senior debut at just 15 and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most influential young attackers, earning plaudits for his creativity, dribbling and playmaking ability. This season, he has been among Barcelona’s standout performers, contributing significantly in goals and assists.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has included Yamal in the World Cup squad despite concerns over a recent hamstring injury sustained in April. The coach, however, has urged caution regarding expectations, stressing the need to manage the teenager’s workload carefully.

“He’s still 18 years old… we have to give him time,” de la Fuente said, adding that while Yamal’s talent is extraordinary, Spain will avoid placing “unnecessary pressure” on him ahead of the tournament.

Yamal himself acknowledged the magnitude of the moment, saying it feels like he has been playing at the top level for years despite his age. He also expressed excitement at the prospect of competing in his first World Cup, calling it a dream he has “imagined many times”.

Beyond football, Yamal has remained in the global spotlight. He drew attention for waving a Palestinian flag during a club celebration and faced controversy over entertainment arrangements at his 18th birthday party, which led to public scrutiny in Spain. Despite this, his popularity remains immense, with his jersey among the best-selling in the country.

Spain enter the tournament after strong recent form, including a Euro 2024 title win , but they have not gone beyond the World Cup quarterfinal stage since their 2010 triumph.

Spain will open their campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. All eyes will be on whether Yamal can deliver on football’s biggest stage.
