Lando Norris Clinches First Pole of 2026 as Hamilton's Penalty Shakes Up Hungarian GP Grid

Defending Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris produced a sensational final lap to secure his first pole position of the 2026 season, edging Lewis Hamilton by a razor-thin 0.012 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Hamilton initially looked set to claim a record-extending 105th career pole position and his first for a full Grand Prix since Hungary in 2023. However, Norris delivered when it mattered most, snatching the top spot in the closing moments before Hamilton's fortunes worsened with a three-place grid penalty for impeding McLaren's Oscar Piastri during qualifying.

The penalty dropped the Ferrari driver from second to fifth on the starting grid, while Charles Leclerc moved up to start alongside Norris on the front row. Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli will line up third, followed by Max Verstappen, with Hamilton and Piastri completing the top six.

Norris admitted he still had more pace left in the car despite sealing pole.

"It's been a while," the Briton said after qualifying, adding that he felt confident throughout the weekend and believed McLaren's latest upgrades had significantly improved the car's performance. He also felt another run could have produced an even faster lap after making minor mistakes in his pole-winning effort.

Hamilton, meanwhile, was left frustrated after the stewards ruled that he had blocked Piastri during a flying lap. The seven-time world champion explained that he did not receive the usual radio warning about an approaching car and only realized Piastri was behind him at the final moment.

Piastri, forced to take evasive action, blamed Hamilton for the incident, saying the Ferrari driver had not checked his mirrors.

Mercedes endured a difficult qualifying session despite Antonelli's strong performance. George Russell qualified seventh and later suffered a mechanical issue while returning to the pits, potentially giving the team extra work before Sunday's race.

For Norris, the pole marks an important milestone after a difficult start to the season. It is the 17th pole position of his Formula 1 career, drawing him level with British legend Jackie Stewart.

With McLaren showing impressive pace and Hamilton facing an uphill battle from fifth, Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix promises an intriguing contest as Norris looks to convert pole into a crucial victory.
