Lando Norris Ends Eight-Month Wait With Dominant Hungarian GP Victory

Lando Norris ended an eight-month Formula 1 victory drought in emphatic fashion by winning the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, capitalising on strong pace, smart strategy and a slice of luck to secure a memorable triumph before the sport heads into its mid-season break.

Starting from pole position, the defending world champion briefly lost the lead after running wide at the second corner, allowing McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to move ahead. However, the race took a dramatic turn when Piastri was delayed after encountering Carlos Sainz Jr.'s Williams while lapping traffic. The setback allowed Norris to emerge ahead following the pit-stop sequence, putting him firmly in control.

From there, the Briton never looked back, producing a flawless drive to claim his first full Grand Prix victory since São Paulo in November 2025.

" The car was unbelievable today. We were flying. Nice to finally do it for the team—it feels like it's been a while, " Norris said after taking the chequered flag.

McLaren's celebrations were short-lived as Piastri's race ended in disappointment when a gearbox failure forced him to retire while running in contention for a podium finish.

The retirement promoted Max Verstappen to second place, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli finished third to further strengthen his position at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship.

Antonelli enjoyed a productive afternoon as his closest title rivals faltered. Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fifth after receiving a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, while George Russell could only manage seventh after nearly stalling at the start.

Although Norris had celebrated a sprint race win in Miami earlier this season, Sunday's success marked his long-awaited return to the top step of the podium in a full Grand Prix.

The Hungarian Grand Prix concludes the first half of the Formula 1 season, with teams now heading into the summer break before racing resumes at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23.
