Lavender Beauty! J&K's Bhaderwah Purple Revolution Blooms Again as Lavender Festival Begins
The scenic Bhaderwah valley in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district was awash in shades of purple and the fragrance of blooming lavender as the 4th Lavender Festival began on Saturday, celebrating a remarkable story of rural transformation driven by science, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Inaugurating the two day festival, Union Minister Jitendra Singh hailed Bhaderwah's emergence as India's leading hub for lavender cultivation and aroma based industries. Popularly known as "Mini Kashmir" , the hill town has gained national recognition through the success of the Purple Revolution , transforming itself from a remote agrarian region into a thriving centre of rural enterprise.
Organised by the CSIR Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu , under the theme "Lavender Goes Global" , the festival brought together farmers, entrepreneurs, scientists and industry representatives from across the country. The event showcased how scientific research and government support have helped create sustainable livelihoods in the Himalayan region.
The success of the lavender revolution in Jammu and Kashmir has also highlighted the growing importance of high value crops in transforming rural incomes. Traditionally dependent on conventional farming, many growers have shifted to lavender cultivation, which offers significantly higher returns and opens opportunities in oil extraction, processing and marketing. Experts say the initiative demonstrates how market linked farming and technology driven agriculture can create lasting economic opportunities in rural areas.
Addressing the gathering, Singh said the Purple Revolution stands among the country's most successful examples of technology led rural development. He noted that young farmers and entrepreneurs associated with lavender cultivation are now earning substantial incomes through farming and value added products, while government backed distillation units and industry linkages have strengthened the entire ecosystem.
The initiative is also drawing international attention. Discussions are underway with stakeholders in Grasse, France , regarded as the world's perfume capital, to explore collaborations and expand India's footprint in global lavender markets.
According to CSIR-IIIM Director Zabeer Ahmed , nearly 1,500 hectares have been brought under lavender cultivation, benefiting more than 4,500 farmers and farming families . The mission has produced over 4,000 kilograms of high value lavender oil and generated revenues exceeding Rs 18 crore .
As the fragrance of lavender spreads across Bhaderwah, the valley's journey from a quiet hill town to the birthplace of India's Purple Revolution continues to inspire rural communities across the country.
