Leeds Thrash Newcastle 4-1 as Betis Continue Stunning Start in Spain

Leeds United produced one of the most emphatic results of the Premier League season so far, crushing Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday to climb to third place, while Real Betis continued their impressive start to the La Liga campaign with a 2-1 comeback win at Villarreal.

At Elland Road, Leeds turned the match into a rout with three goals in a 14-minute spell before half-time. The victory lifted Daniel Farke's side to eight points from four matches, four behind joint leaders Arsenal and Manchester City.

Newcastle, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat under manager Matthias Jaissle and dropped to 12th. The Magpies had begun the season unbeaten, but struggled badly against Leeds' intensity and were unable to recover after conceding three times before the break.

Leeds took the lead in the 32nd minute when a deflected effort ended up in the net as an own goal by Lewis Miley. Jayden Bogle then doubled the advantage three minutes later, with the goal coming after a glancing header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0 just before half-time, scoring his eighth career goal against Newcastle and continuing his excellent run of form.

Noah Okafor added Leeds' fourth early in the second half with a half-volley. Newcastle's substitute Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation, but the result was never in serious doubt.

In Spain, Real Betis maintained their remarkable early-season form by coming from behind to defeat Villarreal 2-1 at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

Villarreal took the lead through Gerard Moreno, but Betis responded through Cucho Hernández and centre-back Natan, both scoring before half-time. Goalkeeper Álvaro Valles then produced a series of important saves as Betis protected their lead.

The victory continued Betis' remarkable run, coming only days after their Champions League win over Lille and shortly after their 1-0 league victory against Real Madrid. Betis moved to 12 points and remained firmly among the early La Liga leaders, while Villarreal remained without a league win.

In Italy, Roma preserved their perfect start with a 2-0 victory over Torino. Donyell Malen scored his sixth goal of the season before Niccolò Pisilli added a stoppage-time second, keeping Roma top on goal difference.

Inter Milan also stayed unbeaten, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Udinese 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller. Udinese raced into a 2-0 lead, but Inter responded with five goals before a late consolation. The reigning champions now have four wins from four matches.

Meanwhile, Como moved into third place with a 2-1 victory over Parma, continuing their unbeaten start to the Serie A season.
