Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Wednesday said differences of opinion and criticism were legitimate but must be expressed with fairness, restraint and respect for institutional integrity, stressing that professional ethics were essential to maintaining public confidence in the justice system.

Speaking at the 2nd Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education on the theme “The Importance of Ethics in the Legal Profession”, the CJI said the dignity of the justice system depended on how members of the Bar conducted themselves, both inside and outside courtrooms.

In a world increasingly shaped by public visibility and commercial interests, professional ethics must remain the guiding principle, he said, cautioning that personal expression should not undermine public trust. Kant said professional success should not be measured solely by the quality of legal arguments or outcomes secured, but also by the manner in which those outcomes are achieved. While legal knowledge provides the tools of the profession, ethics determine how they should be used, he added.

Emphasising the relationship between the Bench and the Bar, the CJI said courts relied on advocates to present relevant facts, identify applicable laws and examine competing arguments with intellectual honesty. He said the strength of the adversarial system lay not merely in forceful arguments but also in ensuring that proceedings remained within ethical boundaries. Any erosion of these standards could weaken public confidence in the justice system.

Kant also highlighted lawyers' responsibilities towards clients, including honesty in legal advice, diligence in representation, fairness in professional fees and sensitivity towards vulnerable litigants. He stressed that ethical values should be cultivated from the earliest stages of legal education. Students must learn to navigate competing professional obligations and understand the consequences of their decisions, rather than merely memorising rules of conduct.

Ethical behaviour must guide everyday decisions, he said, adding that the credibility of the legal profession rested on consistent integrity and accountability. IIULER Goa Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Venkata Rao was the chief guest at the lecture. Attorney General R Venkataramani and Supreme Court Bar Association president Pradeep Kumar Rai also addressed the gathering.
