Lepakshi Launches QR Authentication for Andhra Handicrafts

In a significant step towards modernising Andhra Pradesh's traditional handicrafts sector, the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (Lepakshi) has introduced a QR code-based digital authentication system for its products. The initiative is aimed at enhancing transparency, promoting authentic craftsmanship, and expanding the global reach of the state's centuries-old artisan traditions.

The programme, implemented following the vision of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, allows customers to access detailed information about a handicraft with a single smartphone scan. Buyers can instantly view the product's history, cultural significance, manufacturing process, materials used, and the profile of the artisan who created it, offering a deeper connection between consumers and the craftsmen behind each piece.

Until now, buyers often had little information about the origin of handcrafted products or the artisans responsible for creating them. The new digital system addresses this gap by providing verified product information, helping customers make informed purchases while ensuring artisans receive due recognition for their work. Officials believe the initiative will strengthen consumer confidence and improve the market value of authentic handcrafted products.

The first phase of the programme features several of Andhra Pradesh's iconic handicrafts, including the GI-tagged Bobbili Veena crafted by Bonumaddi Murali and Kalamkari paintings by C. Subrahmanyam, depicting scenes from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Krishna Leela. More handicraft products from across the state are expected to be integrated into the QR-enabled platform in the coming months.

Beyond improving the shopping experience, the initiative is expected to support exports by enabling international buyers to verify the authenticity and origin of products with ease. The digital traceability system is also expected to discourage counterfeit products, protect traditional crafts, and ensure that the creators receive proper credit in domestic and overseas markets.

The initiative complements Lepakshi's ongoing efforts to modernise the handicrafts ecosystem through e-commerce platforms, upgraded showrooms, and digital marketing. Andhra Pradesh is home to several renowned Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged handicrafts, such as Bobbili Veena, Srikalahasti Kalamkari, Machilipatnam Kalamkari, Kondapalli Toys, Etikoppaka Toys, Budithi Brassware, and Durgi Stone Carvings. By combining traditional artistry with digital technology, the state hopes to preserve its rich cultural heritage while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for thousands of artisans and positioning Andhra Pradesh as a stronger player in the global handicrafts market.
