LG Dinesh Sharma Leads Beach Clean-Up, Interacts With Shaheed Dweep Residents

Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor Dinesh Sharma on Sunday led a cleanliness campaign at Shaheed Dweep, formerly known as Neil Island, during his two-day visit to the island to attend programmes marking World Tourism Day.

Sharma participated in cleanliness drives at the popular Bharatpur Beach and Laxmanpur Sunset Beach and reviewed solid waste management arrangements on the island, according to an official statement. The Lieutenant Governor also visited the Shaheed Dweep Police Station and primary health centre, where he participated in cleanliness activities and reviewed basic public facilities.

At the health centre, Sharma interacted with doctors and healthcare personnel to understand the facility’s requirements and the challenges faced by them. He discussed issues related to healthcare services and the needs of the local population. During his visit, Sharma also interacted with representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions, local public representatives and residents.

The discussions covered cleanliness, tourism, sanitation and developmental issues on the island. Sharma heard suggestions and concerns from local stakeholders regarding civic amenities and measures to improve public facilities.

The cleanliness campaign assumes significance as Shaheed Dweep is a prominent tourist destination known for its beaches and scenic attractions. Maintaining hygiene and effective waste management is important for both residents and visitors, particularly at locations that receive substantial tourist footfall.

The Lieutenant Governor’s visit also included an assessment of civic and public service facilities, with interactions aimed at understanding local requirements. The administration’s focus on cleanliness and waste management comes alongside efforts to promote tourism while addressing sanitation and other developmental needs on the island.

Shaheed Dweep, one of the well-known destinations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, attracts visitors for its beaches and natural surroundings.
