A parked IndiGo aircraft carrying more than 140 passengers and crew members was struck by lightning at Kolkata airport on Friday morning, prompting the airline to ground the aircraft and arrange an alternative flight for stranded passengers.

According to sources, the incident involved an Airbus A320neo scheduled to operate flight 6E 6068 from Kolkata to Agartala. The lightning strike occurred after boarding had been completed and while the aircraft was still stationed on the ground.

Sources said the impact caused the aircraft's power system to shut down , triggering safety protocols. The plane was subsequently grounded for detailed technical inspections to assess any damage caused by the strike.

All passengers and crew members on board were reported safe. The airline later arranged another aircraft to transport passengers to Agartala, minimizing disruption to their travel plans.

Two IndiGo ground staff members who were reportedly affected by the lightning incident received immediate medical attention. Sources said both individuals are in stable condition .

There were over 140 people, including the operating crew, on board the aircraft when the incident occurred. Aviation experts note that commercial aircraft are designed to withstand lightning strikes , but comprehensive inspections are mandatory before an aircraft can return to service.

IndiGo declined to comment on the incident.

The episode highlights the operational challenges posed by adverse weather conditions during the monsoon season, when airports and airlines often face disruptions due to thunderstorms and lightning activity.
