Lion Cub Dies of Suffocation at Nahargarh Biological Park, Post-Mortem Reveals Cause
A newborn lion cub at Nahargarh Biological Park's safari area died on Tuesday due to suffocation caused by a perforation or constriction in the trachea , according to forest officials, highlighting the challenges of caring for newborn wildlife in captivity.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Vijay Pal said the cub had been reunited with its mother, Tara , soon after birth and was being cared for normally. However, the cub became lethargic on Tuesday morning and was unable to feed. Officials observed the lioness continuously licking the cub and carrying it in her mouth before its condition deteriorated.
A medical board conducted a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that the cub died from suffocation resulting from a tracheal perforation or constriction. Following established protocols, the forest department and the lion safari administration performed the cub's last rites.
Officials said Tara remains in normal health and is under constant observation by veterinarians. The incident underscores the importance of continuous veterinary monitoring, neonatal care, and scientific management practices in zoological parks, where the survival of newborn animals often depends on timely medical intervention and close welfare supervision.
