LPU Protest: NH-44 Restored After 15-Hour Blockade, Police Probe Rape Allegation

Students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab's Phagwara were leaving the campus on Monday after authorities suspended classes for 10 days following violent protests over an unverified allegation of rape involving a female student.

Traffic on NH-44, blocked by protesters for more than 15 hours, was restored during the intervening night, with police saying the situation was under control. A heavy police deployment remained outside the university.

The unrest began early Sunday after students alleged that an outsider, described by protesters as a plumber, had raped a female student at Girls' Hostel-3 and that the hostel warden had been informed. Police registered an FIR against an unknown person and formed an SIT to investigate.

Police said forensic samples, CCTV footage and call records would be examined. The allegation has not been established. LPU has denied that any such incident occurred on campus and termed the claims “false, baseless and fabricated”. Three students staying in the room identified by protesters also denied that a rape had taken place.

The protest later turned violent when police tried to clear the highway blockade. Students allegedly pelted stones at police and attacked vehicles, while police used a lathi charge. Two police vehicles were set on fire and four to five vehicles were damaged, officials said. Several policemen were injured.

Protesters also allegedly vandalised shops, an ATM kiosk, vehicles and other campus property. ADGP M F Farooqui led additional forces into the campus, followed by a flag march.

LPU has postponed midterm examinations and allowed students to return home after consulting parents. Those staying back were advised to remain indoors.

Students have also raised concerns over hostel security and demanded women-only hostel staff. Police are separately examining claims surrounding the recent suicide of a Telangana student at LPU, with the DIG saying action would follow if evidence of foul play emerges.

The Punjab State Women's Commission has sought reports on the LPU violence and a separate protest at Chitkara University, where a police vehicle was allegedly torched following unverified claims about two female students.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said those responsible for arson and vandalism would be identified through evidence and face action.
