Lufthansa Brings Starlink Wi-Fi To 850 Planes In Major In-Flight Connectivity Upgrade

Lufthansa Group is preparing to give passengers a major upgrade in the way they stay connected in the sky, with its first Starlink-equipped aircraft scheduled to operate a flight on August 19.

The Airbus A320neo will mark the beginning of Lufthansa Group’s planned rollout of Starlink high-speed internet across around 850 aircraft operated by its 10 airlines by 2029.

The service, branded Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi, is designed to offer passengers much faster and more reliable connectivity than traditional in-flight internet. Travellers will be able to use the connection for streaming, cloud-based work and other data-heavy online activities while flying.

The service will also be available free of charge to Miles & More status members and Travel ID users, across all cabin classes.

However, Lufthansa's move does not mark the first time Starlink has been used to provide Wi-Fi on commercial flights. Several airlines around the world have already introduced or begun rolling out the satellite-based service. Lufthansa's significance lies in the scale of its planned deployment, which will make it one of the largest airline-group rollouts of Starlink in the aviation industry.

Starlink uses a network of low-Earth-orbit satellites, allowing it to provide faster connections and lower latency than many conventional satellite-based aviation internet systems. The technology has increasingly attracted airlines seeking to meet growing passenger expectations for uninterrupted connectivity.

Lufthansa Group Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx said reliable connectivity has become an important part of delivering a premium onboard experience, reflecting how passengers increasingly expect to remain connected while travelling.

With approximately 850 aircraft planned for the programme, Lufthansa Group is positioning itself as Europe's largest Starlink aviation operator. The rollout will gradually extend high-speed internet to passengers across the group's airlines, potentially making streaming, online work and everyday browsing far more seamless during flights.
