Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Jolts Uttarkashi In Uttarakhand, No Casualties Reported

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake jolted Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district in the early hours of Monday, triggering panic in parts of the Yamuna valley and prompting residents to rush out of their buildings. Officials said there were no reports of casualties or major damage.

According to the District Emergency Operation Centre, the earthquake occurred at 1:21 am. Its epicenter was located near the Rajgarhi area of Barkot tehsil, at a depth of 10 kilometres, officials said.

Tremors were felt across several parts of the district, including Uttarkashi, Barkot, Purola, Mori, Chinyalisaur and Dunda. The shaking startled residents in several areas, with some people stepping outside their homes as a precaution.

Officials said information about the impact of the earthquake was collected from tehsildars, police station and outpost in-charges, revenue sub-inspectors and village heads across the affected areas.

The assessment carried out so far has found no loss of life and no significant damage to property, officials said. Authorities, however, continued to monitor the situation and gather ground-level information following the tremors.

Uttarkashi is located in a seismically active part of the Himalayan region, where earthquakes and tremors are periodically recorded. Monday’s earthquake, though moderate in intensity, was strong enough to be felt across multiple settlements in the district.

The early-morning timing added to residents’ concern, as many were asleep when the tremors struck. People in affected areas were advised to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities.

Officials said the situation remained under control, with field-level agencies continuing to check for any damage or disruption that may not have been immediately reported.
