Indonesia’s Sumatra Island was hit by a strong earthquake on Tuesday, triggering panic among residents. According to India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at around 10:26 a.m. IST and measured 6.2 on the Richter scale , although some preliminary social media and network reports indicated a magnitude of 6.1 . Officials identified the epicenter off the northeastern tip of Sumatra Island at a depth of about 20 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface .

The tremors were strongly felt across the Sumatra and Medan regions , forcing people to rush out of buildings and gather in open spaces. There have been no confirmed reports of casualties or major property damage so far.

Authorities confirmed that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami alert , as there was no significant rise in sea levels following the quake. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency urged residents to remain cautious and prepare for possible aftershocks .

Officials advised coastal communities to stay alert and avoid damaged or structurally weak buildings. People were also warned to stay away from windows, glass surfaces, and heavy furniture to reduce the risk of injury during potential tremors.

Indonesia lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a highly seismic zone where tectonic plates frequently collide. The country sits at the convergence of the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates , making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions globally.

Following the quake, local emergency teams began ground assessments to evaluate potential damage and monitor affected areas. National and regional geophysical agencies continue to closely track seismic activity to detect any further developments.
