Magnus Carlsen Was Simply Unstoppable! World No. 1 Wins Esports World Cup Again
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen underlined his dominance once again, successfully defending his chess title at the Esports World Cup after completing an unbeaten campaign in Paris on Saturday.
Representing Team Liquid, the five-time world champion defeated Belarusian grandmaster Denis Lazavik of AG.AL 2-0 in the grand final, winning both sets by identical 3-1 margins.
The 35-year-old Norwegian never lost a match throughout the tournament, combining his trademark precision with a calculated approach to keep his opponents under pressure.
Carlsen said he had closely followed Lazavik's games and discussed his opponent's style with his coaches before the final. He also acknowledged that he had previously faced Lazavik online and had learned from those encounters.
Despite his dominant run, Carlsen admitted that there were moments when he felt vulnerable during the tournament. He pointed to matches against Alireza Firouzja and Nihal Sarin as contests where he had come close to facing serious trouble.
"I'm thrilled to go undefeated," Carlsen said after securing the championship.
Asked what it would take to beat him in the current format, Carlsen suggested that defeating him remains particularly difficult, while acknowledging that Firouzja had come close to mounting a serious challenge.
The tournament's championship format featured best-of-three sets. The first two sets consisted of four games each, while a deciding third set would have featured two games if necessary.
Carlsen's victory further strengthens his reputation as one of the most dominant figures in modern chess, particularly in high-speed online competition.
Meanwhile, Hikaru Nakamura of the United States secured third place after defeating Firouzja 4-1.
