Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said 49 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have proposed investments worth ₹2,320.97 crore in Pune’s Chakan-Bhosari industrial belt, strengthening the region’s manufacturing and automobile ecosystem.

The investments, formalised through MoUs, are expected to expand production and generate thousands of jobs. However, the government has not provided a specific employment figure, making the eventual job creation dependent on the scale and nature of individual projects. The companies are expected to begin production within one to two years.

The investment push comes amid concerns over Chakan’s infrastructure. The Opposition has alleged that industrial units are considering relocation because of severe traffic congestion, pothole-ridden roads, water shortages and other civic deficiencies. Opposition leaders have cited around 20 units and potential employment implications, while the government has rejected claims of a broader industrial exodus.

The risks to the new investment pipeline include land availability, traffic bottlenecks, road quality, power and water supply, waste management and delays in infrastructure upgrades. Recent reports have also highlighted inadequate streetlighting, CCTV coverage and security in parts of Chakan MIDC.

Industries Minister Uday Samant said infrastructure concerns are being addressed on priority. Authorities have set deadlines for road repairs and traffic measures, while the government has promised a wider infrastructure overhaul.

Fadnavis said Maharashtra will conduct an MSME census to assess units, employment, production capacity and infrastructure requirements. The state also plans to convert ageing industrial estates into “industrial cities”, with dedicated administrative mechanisms and locally funded infrastructure.

The government’s ability to resolve Chakan’s infrastructure constraints will be critical to converting the proposed investments into operational capacity, jobs and sustained industrial growth.
