Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday invited Amazon to expand its presence in the state by investing in data centres, healthcare infrastructure, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven skill development , during a meeting with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy .

According to an official statement, Fadnavis highlighted Maharashtra's position as India's leading data centre hub and said the state is creating a favourable ecosystem to support further growth in digital infrastructure. He noted that Maharashtra aims to grow its economy from an estimated USD 660 billion to USD 1 trillion by 2030 and is leveraging technology to accelerate that journey.

The chief minister said the state government is increasingly using AI to improve governance and public services across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure . Emphasising the impact of AI on the future workforce, he called for industry partnerships to develop technology-focused skill programmes, particularly for Maharashtra's large MSME sector.

India's data centre industry has expanded rapidly in recent years, with operational capacity crossing 1,500 MW and more than 150 facilities spread across major hubs including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi-NCR.

The meeting comes as states compete to attract large-scale digital infrastructure investments. Telangana recently secured a major commitment from Amazon Web Services to expand its data centre footprint in Hyderabad, while Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a new destination for AI and cloud infrastructure projects, including proposed large-scale investments in Visakhapatnam.

Fadnavis also highlighted opportunities in the upcoming Medicity project in Navi Mumbai and reiterated Maharashtra's focus on promoting green data centres through renewable energy incentives and a dedicated policy framework.
