In a major political setback for the Trinamool Congress, Chandrima Bhattacharya has resigned from her post as West Bengal state president of the Trinamool Congress , just a month after being appointed to the key organisational role. Her sudden exit comes at a time when the party is already facing internal unrest and factional tensions following its performance in the 2026 Assembly elections .

Bhattacharya submitted her resignation letter to party supremo Mamata Banerjee , also stepping down from all other organisational responsibilities she held within the party. She was appointed state president during a major organisational meeting held at Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on June 3, replacing senior leader Subrata Bakshi .

The resignation has triggered fresh speculation over deepening divisions within the party . In her letter and subsequent remarks, Bhattacharya expressed emotional distress over recent developments. She cited a phone conversation with Banerjee in which she was allegedly blamed for allowing a rebel faction’s entry into the Trinamool Bhavan headquarters in Kolkata.

The situation escalated after members of the dissident group led by Ritabrata Banerjee reportedly took control of the party office, changing locks and declaring it as their operational base. Following her resignation, Bhattacharya was also seen attending a meeting with rebel leaders at the state assembly, further fuelling speculation about a possible political realignment . However, she has not confirmed joining any faction, saying she is still considering her future course.

A former minister who handled key portfolios such as Finance and Health , Bhattacharya was once regarded as one of the closest aides of Mamata Banerjee. Her exit adds to a growing list of organisational disruptions within the party . Several senior leaders, including former Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim , veteran MLA Jawed Khan , and leader Golam Rabbani , are also reported to have aligned with the dissident bloc.

The crisis has further widened with reports of a breakaway group among MPs , while the Election Commission is examining disputes over the party symbol, funds, and organisational control. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the resignation as politically motivated, linking it to post electoral frustration rather than structural issues.

With mounting resignations and shifting loyalties, the Trinamool Congress is facing one of its most serious internal crises in recent years , raising concerns over its organisational stability in West Bengal’s changing political landscape.
