Mamata Banerjee Booked by Kolkata Police Over Alleged Violation of HC Conditions

Kolkata Police on Saturday registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day event.

The FIR was registered at Hastings Police Station against Banerjee and the organisers of the TMCP meeting held on Cathedral Road in central Kolkata on Friday, a police officer said.

According to the officer, the case was registered after police examined the conditions laid down by the Calcutta High Court while granting permission for the event. The investigation will determine whether the organisers or other individuals breached any of the directions issued by the court.

“The FIR has been registered for the alleged violation of the court's order. The role of all those involved in the violation will be examined during the course of the investigation,” the officer said.

The TMCP foundation day programme on Friday drew attention as party leaders and supporters gathered in large numbers in central Kolkata. The event was organised by the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.

A suo motu case means the police initiated proceedings on their own rather than acting on a complaint filed by a private individual. The registration of the FIR marks the beginning of a formal investigation into the alleged violation.

Police are expected to examine available evidence, including the conduct of the event and compliance with the court's stipulated conditions, as part of the probe.

The development comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, with major political gatherings frequently requiring authorities to balance public order, traffic management and the right to hold political programmes.

Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and whether the alleged violations are established.
