Mamata Camp Targets Ritabrata Faction in Fresh Legal Move Amid TMC Power Struggle
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) internal rift deepened on Sunday after the Mamata Banerjee-led faction filed fresh police complaints against dissident leader Ritabrata Banerjee and his associates, accusing them of illegally using the party's name, symbol and organisational posts to mislead workers and supporters.
The complaints, filed by TMC joint national secretary Dola Sen at Kalighat Police Station and the Kolkata Police Cyber Crime Division , named Ritabrata Banerjee, former minister Arup Roy , Javed Khan , Sandipan Saha and Biplab Mitra . The party alleged the group was running a parallel organisation without authorisation. Similar complaints were also lodged at Pragati Maidan and New Town police stations a day earlier.
The legal battle follows a month-long leadership dispute triggered by the party's Assembly election defeat . The controversy intensified after the rebel camp held a special session on June 22 in New Town, where it announced a new national working committee excluding Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee , claiming it was rebuilding the organisation. Another meeting in Topsia on Saturday, attended by 47 former Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors , further signalled the rebels' bid to consolidate support.
The Mamata camp has also questioned the funding behind the dissidents' meetings and publicity campaigns and disputed Ritabrata Banerjee's claim to the post of general secretary , saying the designation was never officially conferred upon him.
Rejecting the allegations, Ritabrata Banerjee said, "Anyone can file a complaint. There is law in the country and there is the Election Commission. Let there be faith in the law and the EC."
