Germany goalkeeping icon Manuel Neuer has officially brought the curtain down on his international career once again, confirming that the country's dramatic World Cup exit against Paraguay was his final appearance in the national team's colours.

The 40 year old, who had come out of international retirement to help Germany at the tournament, made the announcement following Monday's heartbreaking elimination. Germany lost 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 following extra time, ending its campaign far earlier than expected.

Speaking after the defeat, an emotional Neuer admitted that this time there would be no return. When asked by broadcaster Sportschau whether the Paraguay match was his last for Germany, he simply replied, "Yes." Speaking, he added, "No. It's very bitter to end it like this."

The decision marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in modern football. Neuer had initially retired from international duty after the 2024 European Championship and repeatedly insisted he would not reverse that decision.

However, circumstances changed before the World Cup. With Marc-André ter Stegen sidelined through injury, Oliver Baumann had stepped in as Germany's first choice goalkeeper, impressing during six World Cup qualifying matches and pre tournament friendlies. Despite public denials from both Neuer and coach Julian Nagelsmann over a possible comeback, speculation continued until Nagelsmann named the veteran as Germany's No. 1 goalkeeper for the World Cup, pushing Baumann back to the bench.

The gamble, however, failed to deliver the desired result. Although Neuer produced a crucial penalty save during the shootout against Paraguay, Germany could not capitalize as three of its players missed from the spot, bringing an abrupt end to the team's World Cup journey.

Neuer's farewell closes a glittering chapter in German football. Since making his international debut in 2009 , he transformed the role of a goalkeeper with his commanding presence, exceptional ball playing ability and trademark "sweeper keeper" style that influenced a generation of players.

He remains the last active member of Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup winning squad and finishes his international career with 128 appearances , making him one of the country's most decorated and respected footballers.

While his final match ended in disappointment, Neuer's legacy extends far beyond one result. His consistency, leadership and revolutionary approach to goalkeeping have left an enduring mark on both German football and the global game.
