Marizanne Kapp Stars As South Africa Defeat India By Six Wickets In Women’s T20 World Cup
Veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball as South Africa defeated India by six wickets in a crucial Group A match of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday.
Kapp first claimed 2/27 with the ball before producing an unbeaten 81 off 45 balls , helping South Africa chase down India’s total of 158/7 and reach 161/4 in 19.1 overs .
The victory strengthened South Africa’s position in the tournament, lifting them to third place in the Group A standings behind India and leaders Australia.
Chasing a challenging target, South Africa began cautiously and were 25 without loss after five overs. India gained the upper hand when spinner Shree Charani struck twice in a double-wicket maiden during the final over of the powerplay. Charani dismissed Laura Wolvaardt for 20 and removed Annerie Dercksen for a duck, reducing South Africa to a difficult position.
However, Kapp and Tazmin Brits steadied the innings with a crucial 97-run partnership for the third wicket . The pair rotated the strike effectively and found timely boundaries to keep the required rate under control.
India’s fielding mistakes proved costly. Kapp received a major reprieve when substitute fielder Radha Yadav dropped a straightforward catch at long-on. The South African all-rounder made full use of the opportunity, continuing to dominate the chase.
Brits contributed a valuable 40 off 36 balls before falling in the 17th over. India had another opportunity to dismiss Kapp in the same over, but Radha dropped a second catch, allowing the veteran batter to continue.
Kapp ensured South Africa capitalised on those missed chances, striking seven fours and four sixes to guide her side home with five balls remaining.
Earlier, India struggled to build momentum on a two-paced surface. After reaching 54 without loss , they slumped to 83/4 due to a middle-order collapse.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma attempted to rebuild the innings with a 33-run partnership. Deepti scored 29 off 21 balls , while Harmanpreet made 24 off 22 deliveries before being dismissed at a crucial stage.
Despite crossing the 150-run mark, India’s total proved insufficient as Kapp’s all-round brilliance and South Africa’s composed chase secured a vital victory.
