Massachusetts Declares August 15 as ‘India Day’ to Honour Indian Diaspora’s Contributions

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has declared August 15, 2026, as India Day to honour the contributions of the Indian diaspora and mark the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence. The proclamation, issued on August 1, also urges residents across the Commonwealth to observe the occasion. "I urge all residents of the Commonwealth to take notice of this day and participate fittingly in its observance," Healey said in the proclamation.

The proclamation says India's independence from British rule in 1947 laid the foundation for the world's largest democracy. It describes India as an ancient civilisation known for its rich mix of cultures, languages, religions, customs and traditions, united by shared values.

Governor Healey also recognised the efforts of Indian community organisations and volunteers for promoting civic engagement, cultural exchange and mutual understanding through annual Independence Day celebrations and community service. The proclamation notes that these efforts continue to strengthen communities across Massachusetts.

In a similar proclamation, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared August 15 as India Day in the city. She welcomed the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and recognised the visit of the Indian Navy's sail training ship INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON 250 celebrations, highlighting the growing relationship between India and Massachusetts.

The proclamation notes that India has the world's largest diaspora, with more than 36 million people of Indian origin living overseas, including over five million Indian Americans in the United States. It says the Indian American community in Massachusetts has made important contributions to healthcare, science, technology, education, business and public service, enriching the state's social, economic and cultural life while reflecting the shared values of democracy, peace and progress.
