Mastantuono’s Hat-Trick Ends Fiorentina’s Winless Start, Rennes Rise To Ligue 1 Summit

Franco Mastantuono struck a stunning hat-trick as Fiorentina finally registered their first Serie A victory of the season with a 4-2 win over Venezia, while Rennes continued their impressive start by moving to the top of Ligue 1.

Both Fiorentina and Venezia had lost their opening three league games, but it was the home side that made the brighter start. Akor Adams put Venezia ahead in the 22nd minute with a right-foot finish after good build-up play from American midfielder Gianluca Busio.

Fiorentina quickly turned the match around through Mastantuono. The young forward scored twice in the 29th and 30th minutes, giving his side a 2-1 lead at half-time. Mateo Pellegrino then extended Fiorentina’s advantage midway through the second half with his second goal in as many games.

Mastantuono completed his hat-trick six minutes from time to cap a memorable individual performance. Venezia’s Antoine Hainaut scored late, but Fiorentina held on for their first points of the campaign. Venezia remained bottom of the 20-team table, while Fiorentina climbed to 15th.

In France, Rennes moved to the Ligue 1 summit with a 1-0 victory over Marseille, making it three consecutive league wins. Recent signing Adrien Thomasson, who joined from Lens, scored six minutes into the second half to settle the contest.

Marseille suffered its third straight defeat, leaving the club with just three points and enduring its worst league start in more than 20 years.

In Spain, Sevilla defeated struggling Valencia 1-0 through Juan Antonio Iglesias’ late header. Valencia failed to record a shot on target and remained bottom with one point from five matches.

In Germany, Schalke beat Union Berlin 3-1, with goalkeeper Loris Karius producing a standout display. The match also saw referee Timo Gerach replaced after suffering a calf problem.

In England, West Ham moved top of the Championship after thrashing Wrexham 6-0, with six different players scoring.
