Matt Fitzpatrick Cruises to French Open Glory, Seals Fourth Win of 2026

Matt Fitzpatrick completed a dominant week at Le Golf National on Sunday, winning the FedEx Open de France by three strokes to claim his fourth victory of 2026 and his 11th DP World Tour title.

The Englishman carded a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish at 20-under 264, with Spain’s Ángel Hidalgo finishing runner-up on 17 under. The victory was also Fitzpatrick’s 15th worldwide professional title.

Fitzpatrick entered the final round with a five-shot advantage after opening the tournament with rounds of 65, 64 and 65. However, his lead was briefly reduced to two shots when Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra mounted a challenge early in the final round.

The 32-year-old stayed patient through the opening 12 holes before producing the decisive shots. He made his first birdie of the day at the 13th hole and added another at the 15th, restoring his cushion. He eventually finished with a bogey at the 18th, but the result was never seriously in doubt.

“Obviously delighted to get it over the line, it was definitely a battle today,” Fitzpatrick said after the round. He added that he had not played his best golf during the opening 12 holes but was pleased with the shots and putts he produced down the stretch.

The win was particularly significant at a venue with a long history. Le Golf National, which hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup and the 2024 Olympic golf competition, returned to the French Open schedule after a year away while extensive work was carried out at the course. Fitzpatrick said he was proud to add his name to a list that includes multiple-time champions such as Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo.

The title also comes during an important personal period for Fitzpatrick. He and his wife Katherine recently welcomed their first child, son Jack, and the golfer said he was eager to return home to see his family.

Fitzpatrick had already enjoyed three PGA Tour victories this year — the Valspar Championship, RBC Heritage and Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the latter alongside younger brother Alex. The French Open marked his first DP World Tour victory of the 2026 season.

Hidalgo closed with a 67, including three birdies over his final five holes, to secure second place. His finish earned him a place in the 155th Open Championship at St Andrews in 2027 through the Open Qualifying Series.

Tom Vaillant, Matthieu Pavon, Eugenio Chacarra and Kristoffer Reitan shared third place at 15 under.
