Matt Reeves Denies Leaving ‘The Batman Part II’ as Steven Soderbergh Steps In
Filmmaker Matt Reeves has dismissed speculation about his departure from The Batman Part II, confirming that he remains attached to the project despite temporarily stepping away from filming due to a family matter.
“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes,” Reeves wrote on X.
The clarification follows reports that Steven Soderbergh will oversee the remaining weeks of principal photography in London while Reeves deals with his personal circumstances. Soderbergh, known for films such as Traffic and Ocean’s Eleven, has agreed to help complete the shoot, with the two filmmakers coordinating to maintain continuity with the footage already filmed.
Speculation about Reeves’ future on the project gained momentum after production was temporarily halted earlier this month and reports emerged that another prominent director would take charge of the remaining shoot. The combination of Reeves’ absence and Soderbergh’s involvement led some fans to believe that a permanent change in directorial leadership was under way.
However, Reeves’ statement makes clear that his absence is temporary and that he has not abandoned the sequel. The arrangement is intended to help the production move forward during a challenging period rather than replace him as director.
Reeves is expected to supervise post-production in Los Angeles, while DC Studios has backed the arrangement. Soderbergh’s involvement will allow the team to complete the outstanding filming under Reeves’ creative direction.
The sequel stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, with Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis returning in their respective roles. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are among the new additions to the cast.
Despite the production disruption, The Batman Part II remains scheduled to arrive in theatres on February 18, 2028.
