Mbappe Strikes Again as France Edge Paraguay 1-0 to Reach World Cup Quarterfinals
France continued their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign by booking a place in the quarterfinals with a hard fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay in Philadelphia. On a day when extreme heat tested both teams, Kylian Mbappe once again proved to be the difference, converting a second half penalty to send Les Bleus into the last eight for the fourth consecutive World Cup .
Played in temperatures close to 38 degrees Celsius , the Round of 16 clash was as much a battle against the weather as it was against a determined Paraguayan defence. France dominated possession and created several opportunities, but Paraguay remained disciplined and physical, frustrating one of the tournament favourites for much of the contest.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review awarded France a penalty. Paraguay's Diego Gomez was adjudged to have brought down a French attacker inside the penalty area, handing Mbappe the opportunity to break the deadlock.
The French captain kept his composure, producing a trademark stuttering run up before calmly sending the ball into the net. It was Mbappe's seventh goal of the tournament , keeping him level at the top of the Golden Boot standings, while also taking his remarkable World Cup tally to 19 goals in just 19 appearances . He now sits just one goal behind Lionel Messi's all time World Cup record of 20 goals .
France could have extended their lead later in the game. Mbappe missed a one on one opportunity before Manu Kone came close with a powerful strike that was brilliantly pushed away by goalkeeper Orlando Gill . Gill also denied Mbappe twice during stoppage time to keep Paraguay's hopes alive until the final whistle.
Despite the narrow scoreline, France comfortably managed the closing stages and ensured Paraguay never found the equaliser. The victory underlined the team's composure, defensive solidity and ability to grind out results even when conditions and opponents make life difficult.
France will now face Morocco in the quarterfinals , with a place in the World Cup semifinals at stake. With Mbappe continuing his outstanding scoring form and the French squad showing resilience under pressure, Les Bleus remain among the strongest contenders to lift the trophy.
