
Meet Samarthak: India’s First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel Joins Navy Fleet
India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding push gained another boost with the delivery of Samarthak, the Indian Navy’s first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), built by Larsen & Toubro at Kattupalli. Delivered on August 27, 2026, the vessel carries more than 75 per cent indigenous content, underscoring the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence industry.
Samarthak has been conceived as a versatile trial and evaluation platform, allowing the Navy to assess equipment, technologies and operational concepts at sea. Its multi-role design enables it to undertake maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.
The vessel also has wider support capabilities. It can tow ships, launch and recover targets, and operate autonomous, remotely operated and unmanned vessels. These functions make Samarthak particularly useful for naval exercises and for testing emerging maritime technologies.
Its significance, however, extends beyond operational utility. The vessel’s high indigenous content demonstrates India’s ability to build sophisticated naval platforms while reducing dependence on imported systems. The project also strengthens domestic expertise in ship design, engineering, systems integration, manufacturing and maintenance.
Indigenous construction creates opportunities across the defence supply chain, including Indian manufacturers, specialised suppliers and MSMEs. It can generate skilled employment and encourage development of capabilities in areas such as electronics, sensors, software, propulsion and precision engineering.
Samarthak’s role as a trial platform adds another important dimension to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Indian-made weapons, sensors and other technologies can be evaluated in realistic maritime conditions, helping developers refine products and potentially accelerate their transition from development to operational deployment.
The vessel also supports greater long-term self-reliance by strengthening domestic capabilities for maintenance, upgrades and lifecycle support. This can improve availability while reducing vulnerabilities associated with overseas supply chains.
The induction of Samarthak therefore represents more than the addition of a new naval asset. It reflects India’s broader transition from a defence buyer to a designer, manufacturer and technology developer, strengthening the industrial foundation needed for a more self-reliant, innovative and globally competitive and strategically resilient defence sector.
