Mexico Roars Into World Cup 2026 With 2-0 Win in Historic and Fiery Opening Night
TThe largest FIFA World Cup in history began with exactly the kind of spectacle football fans dream about, goals, emotion, controversy and history.
In front of a packed and passionate crowd at the iconic Azteca Stadium , co hosts Mexico opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa , delivering an early statement while producing one of the most dramatic opening matches the tournament has ever witnessed.
The night belonged to Mexico, but it also entered the record books.
For the first time in World Cup history, an opening match featured three straight red cards , making it the highest number of dismissals in a World Cup game since the infamous Portugal vs Netherlands clash in 2006 , which had four.
Mexico came into the tournament carrying the burden of expectations after their disappointing group stage exit in Qatar four years ago. But under the bright lights of Azteca and in front of more than 80,000 fans , the home side embraced the occasion.
They wasted no time.
In the ninth minute , Julián Quiñones gave Mexico the perfect start, finishing confidently to send the stadium into celebration. The Colombian born forward, who enjoyed an outstanding season in Saudi football, announced himself on the global stage in style.
Mexico continued to dominate and found a second breakthrough in the 66th minute through Raúl Jiménez .
Wearing the protective headguard that has become part of his identity since suffering a serious skull fracture in 2020, Jiménez powered home a header for his 46th international goal and his first ever World Cup goal across three tournaments.
South Africa’s resistance collapsed in the second half.
Sphephelo Sithole was sent off early after the break for bringing down Brian Gutierrez , before Themba Zwane received another straight red following a VAR review for striking Roberto Alvarado . Reduced to nine men, South Africa struggled to recover.
Yet the drama continued until the final whistle as Mexico defender César Montes was also shown a straight red in stoppage time.
Mexico now tops Group A and heads into its clash against South Korea full of confidence, while South Africa faces the Czech Republic needing an immediate response.
Opening night delivered more than a result, it delivered a reminder that World Cups rarely begin quietly.
