In a major blow to international drug trafficking, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have seized 22.35 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride concealed inside audio equipment that was being shipped to India from the Dominican Republic . The narcotics, valued at an estimated USD 1.5 million , were intercepted at an air cargo warehouse near Miami International Airport .

According to a CBP statement , the parcel had been declared as "music equipment" and contained speakers and amplifiers intended to disguise the illicit cargo. During a detailed inspection, officers uncovered eight pouches and four bricks of a white powdery substance hidden inside four speakers and two amplifiers .

Field tests confirmed the substance was cocaine hydrochloride , prompting authorities to immediately seize the shipment. The operation formed part of Operation Striker Shield , a nationwide enforcement initiative launched by the CBP to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks during the ongoing FIFA World Cup , when heightened cargo and passenger movement can be exploited by criminal organisations.

Daniel Alonso , Director of Field Operations for the CBP's Miami and Tampa Field Office , said the seizure highlights the agency's continued commitment to preventing dangerous drugs from entering legitimate trade channels.

He noted that Operation Striker Shield , supported by intelligence-led targeting, advanced screening technology and the vigilance of frontline officers, is proving effective in disrupting transnational criminal organisations attempting to move narcotics through commercial supply chains.

Officials said traffickers had attempted to exploit routine cargo shipments by concealing the drugs inside electronic equipment, a method frequently used to evade customs scrutiny. However, the suspicious consignment was identified before it could leave the United States.

Following the seizure, the cocaine was taken into CBP custody, while Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) launched a criminal investigation to identify those behind the attempted smuggling operation. Authorities are now working to trace the shipment's origin, intended recipients and any links to broader international drug trafficking networks.
