Middle East War, Day 11: Nobody Is Winning. Except Russia.
The bombs did not stop at dawn . Eleven days into the most explosive military confrontation the Middle East has seen in a generation. It is widening, deepening, and pulling the entire world in with it.
On Tuesday morning, America's Defence Secretary told reporters at the Pentagon that it would be yet another most intense day of strikes inside Iran, with the most fighters, bombers, strikes, and refined intelligence ever, while Iranian ballistic missile attacks have fallen 90% and drone attacks 83%, showing Iran's arsenal being systematically dismantled. And yet, Iran is not flinching. It is adapting and its adaptation is terrifying .The IRGC immediately announced a shift in tactics: fewer missiles, each with a warhead over one tonne , trading volume for concentrated devastation . Ali Larijani warned that the Strait of Hormuz could be a strait of peace or defeat and suffering , while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran would fight " as long as necessary ," defying Trump's claims of a swift end. On Day 10, Kamal Kharazi , foreign policy adviser to the supreme leader, told CNN there was no room for diplomacy, citing repeated US deception during negotiations, and said the war would end only if international economic pressure forces Washington to stop, not through Iranian capitulation. The Israeli military added that it would "harm anyone who threatens Israel," signaling the new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is now a marked target. The new supreme leader has a bull's eye on his chest and he knows it.
There is one story from this war that refuses to be buried, and it is growing darker by the day. Between 165 and 180 people , mostly children, were killed when a US strike hit Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab on February 28, and video released by Iran shows a Tomahawk missile hitting the school and nearby military site . Trump said the attack is " still being investigated ," while Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth declined to let " open source " material determine what happened. That is not a denial. The schoolyard in Minab remains the unresolved moral wound at the centre of this war.
Reports then emerged Tuesday morning that added another layer of shock to an already staggering day. Iranian state TV referred to the new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei using the Farsi word " janbaz " meaning "wounded by the enemy" during coverage it is calling the " Ramadan war ." When asked directly at the Pentagon briefing whether Khamenei had been wounded, Hegseth declined to confirm or deny. Khamenei has not been seen publicly since the war began. He is reportedly living in hiding Despite all of this, hundreds of thousands of Iranians flooded the streets of Tehran on Tuesday not to flee, but to march . They rallied in solidarity with the wounded, hidden leader, waving flags and chanting defiance . A nation simultaneously rallying and fracturing all under the same falling bombs.
The Persian Gulf , long insulated by diplomacy and oil wealth, is now fully engulfed in war. On Tuesday, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones , with six shot down over Kuwait alone. Saudi Arabia destroyed drones near al-Kharj and Az Zulfi — limited damage, no deaths — while a drone strike ignited a fire at Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais Industrial Complex , home to ADNOC facilities. The Saudi Foreign Ministry warned continued attacks would severely affect relations. In Bahrain , a 29-year-old woman was killed and eight wounded when a missile struck Manama . Gulf Air suspended flights, Bahrain’s airspace remained closed, and the UAE , exhausted after eleven nights of air raid sirens, lowered overnight missile alerts , highlighting the relentless toll of the bombardment.
The war at sea is escalating as over 150 ships sit anchored outside the Strait of Hormuz , tanker traffic nears zero, and insurance is withdrawn. Fifteen thousand passengers are stranded on six vessels, and a bulk carrier off the UAE was likely attacked. Iran’s maritime reach is expanding, forcing Pakistan to launch " Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr " to escort ships through the Arabian Sea , threatening Karachi’s economic lifelines and showing the conflict’s growing blast radius .
Thousands of Americans are stranded in the Middle East with flights nearly halted. The State Department is running charters for 3,000, while 9,000 left independently. Dubai Airport , hit by drones on day two, remains partially open. When asked why evacuation plans were not in place, Trump said: "It happened all very quickly." That answer will not satisfy the Americans still waiting .
In Lebanon , southern villages below the Litani River are emptying again, with at least 397 killed and nearly 700,000 displaced since Israeli strikes resumed. The IDF issued new evacuation orders, struck Hezbollah’s Al-Qard Al-Hassan in Beirut, and warned of heavy operations, while Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel. In Qlayaa , Father Pierre al-Rahi was killed by Israeli tank fire after refusing to evacuate his congregation. The IRGC claimed a strike on the US Harir Air Base in Erbil, despite Iraq’s protest , and Turkey confirmed NATO air defences shot down an Iranian missile — the first direct engagement of a NATO member in this war.
Europe is alarmed: German Chancellor Merz warned of no joint plan to end the war, Cardinal McElroy called it “not morally legitimate,” and UNESCO cited daily damage to schools and heritage sites. Spain pledged €9 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon. The E3 agreed to proportionate defensive measures, while France urged Iran to cease strikes and prepared a mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz . China, Russia, and France contacted Iran about a ceasefire, but Tehran says diplomacy has no room yet.
Iran has spent a third of 2026 offline, with a 240-hour internet blackout affecting 90 million people . Oil markets are volatile, with Brent crude spiking near $120 before falling to $90, US gas prices up 17%, and the G7 ready to release emergency reserves. EU President Costa warned that Russia is the main beneficiary, using rising energy prices to fund its war in Ukraine, and Putin offered Europe additional oil supplies. He is the only leader on the planet watching this war with anything resembling a smile .
